Dunedin City Council have temporarily closed John Wilson Ocean Drive to ensure safe passage between Chisholm Links Golf Course and the beach for endangered New Zealand sea lion ‘Hiriwa.’ Hiriwa recently gave birth to her pup at Chisholm Links Golf Course and is one of approximately ten pups to be born annually in Dunedin NZ. Dunedin City Council have stated the public can still visit the golf course and the beach, but must “Stay 20m away and keep dogs on a lead.”
Department of Conservation ranger Jim Fyfe stated "They'll look for places that they're not going to be found by male sea lions. And I think she's picked a good one."
Bravo Dunedin City Council, may your action set precedent in The Catlins!
