Matariki refers to 9 stars, also known as the Pleiades, visible during June/July. According to the Maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar), the reappearance of Matariki signals the New Year. It is a time to celebrate new life, remember the deceased and plan for the future; to enjoy kai (food), waiata (song), tākaro (games) and haka.
Spread aroha and treat a loved one or yourself to a Māori inspired product, such as Little Natives or Māhina designs jewelry.
Thank you Southern Institute of Technology and Matariki for organising such beautiful events.
