"Our taonga is hurting. Shellfish beds and crayfish stocks have been decimated, the seabed is suffocating with plastic and sediment. The Hauraki Gulf, Tīkapa Moana, Te Moananui-ā-Toi, needs our help." - Moana Tamaariki-Pohe.
Hauraki Gulf Forum released their ‘State of our Gulf 2020’ report today. Their findings are as follows:
1) Crayfish/kōura are over-fished.
2) Sediment, nutrients, chemicals and plastics continue to pollute the water.
3) Several species of seabirds and shorebirds are now classified as threatened.
4) Cockles/tuangi are over-fished.
5) Marine pests, such as the Mediterranean fanworm have more than doubled.
6) Kina barrens have replaced once lush kelp forests.
