"E rere kau mai te awanui, mai te kahui maunga ki Tangaroa, Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au."
“The great river flows from the mountains to the sea, I am the river, the river is me."
1) Traditionally, Māori believe humans and the natural world are interconnected. Humans are regarded as part of a "web."
2) "Ki uta ki tai" encapsulates the importance of recognising the interconnectedness of the natural world and that the wellbeing of humans is dependent on the environment.
3) The circle of life: trees produce the oxygen we breathe and the oceans produce healthy air. According to Alexander Von Humboldt, the world is a single interconnected organism.
4) Food production: healthy soil is critical for water and food crops, to clean and store water, to support biodiversity and regulate the climate.
What if we celebrated nature, the way we celebrate Christmas?
