Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity! This years theme is “We’re part of the solution." According to the United Nations, “Biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges.” Despite all of the technological advances, humans remain completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy.. to name a few.
This International Day for Biological Diversity, I ask you to consider how you can reduce your environmental impact to preserve our natural resources. We all have a part of Papatūānuku we feel connected to, be it surfing, swimming, fishing, hiking, gardening. Do your part to reduce your impact while enjoying outdoor activities by:
1) Collecting rubbish when next at the beach or while out hiking.
2) Using un-weighted, single-hooked lines opposed to nets and long-lines when fishing.
3) Swapping single-use plastic for reusables.
4) Walking opposed to driving on to beaches, especially where wildlife reside.
