Meet Gareth Hamilton, who along with Kate is the co-owner of community hub The Batch Cafe in Invercargill.
Prior to opening The Batch Cafe in 2010, Gareth was a commercial fisherman on Stewart Island for 20 years.
Nowadays he trades coffee, instead of crayfish and pāua.
The Batch Cafe has won numerous Hospitality New Zealand awards. I queried Gareth as to why he believes The Batch has been so successful (if you consider queues out the door successful), "From the beginning we have offered good food and coffee, quality service and a friendly atmosphere."
Naturally, I queried him on their sustainability practices. "Our takeaway coffee cups and containers are compostable and take approximately 10 days to break down." (See photographic evidence). "Our Hummingbird Coffee grounds are utilised for fertilizer and I grow a majority of our produce."
Be sure to stop by The Batch Cafe when in stunning Southland NZ!
