Great news! Local councils can now regulate fishing activity to protect New Zealand’s marine environment.
The Court of Appeal decided councils could control fishing, providing it was not under the jurisdiction of the Fisheries Act 1996.
Forest & Bird Legal Counsel Peter Anderson stated "the Court of Appeal’s decision is confirmation that communities have the right to protect their coastal environments from the effects of bad fishing practice."
Thank you to Forest & Bird and the Motiti Rohe Moana Trust for defending the case against fisheries.
