June marks the 51st celebration of Pride Month - a time when millions of people come together in support of the LGBTQ community. Pride Month was raised in 1969 in response to a violent approach by the police at a Gay club called Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, New York.
Since then, Pride Month has been celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the Stonewall Uprising, which was the trigger moment for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.
Today, out of 195 countries, 126 have decriminalized homosexuality and LGBTQ community voice has been heard. Taiwan’s parliament is the first to pass a same-sex marriage law and Scotland is the first country in the world to include LGBTQ history and rights into their schools curriculum. In addition, there will be no discrimination in the workplace for those who live in the United States anymore, since the Supreme Court ruled on LGBTQ employee rights and have made it illegal to fire them for being homosexual or transgender.
Much work still needs to be done, but the LGBTQ community has been taking large steps towards the fight for rights and gender equality in the world and they are earning it. Pride Months main purpose is to recognise the role that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer have had on history on a global scale and to support the cause and gives voices to their community. Pride Month is all about understanding that sexual orientation is not a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of respect. Its fair to be who you are and to love whom you want, as long as you are sharing love and spreading it.
