Thank you Damian Rowe at Stuff for raising awareness of my petition on Change.org - https://www.change.org/ProtectNewZealandSeaLion.
I am proposing vehicle restrictions on Surat Bay and Cannibal Bay in The Catlins; two beaches known to be inhabited by our indigenous sea lions.
According to Stats NZ, tourism has been rapidly increasing in The Catlins, therefore it is important we safeguard our coasts and wildlife.
While I am regretful my proposition opposes those that consider driving on beaches to be their right, I consider protecting wildlife and their habitats to be a higher priority.
