Their Home, Our Playground
Beaches are marine mammals homes, among with other wildlife. Beaches are our playgrounds.
According to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright: New Zealand is ranked as having one of the
highest proportion of threatened species in the world.
One of those threatened species is the New Zealand sea lion/whakahao. They are classified as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Since 1994, they have been gradually returning to mainland New Zealand from the Subantarctic Islands. New Zealand Geographic asked "Can we make room for them?"
The Department of Conservation ask we "Be respectful when driving on beaches, dunes, riverbeds and wetlands. If formed
tracks are available, use them. Don’t drive over untracked areas – it is highly damaging to vegetation, causes unsightly tracks and could destroy the nests of some of the world’s rarest birds."
Please sign my petition on Change.org to restrict vehicles on TWO beaches in The Catlins (one of which is pictured) to protect indigenous sea lions at https://www.change.org/ProtectNewZealandSeaLion.
