Happy Waitangi Day!
Te Rā O Waitangi!
May New Zealander’s honour the Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840 and continue working towards equality and peace.
In celebration of Waitangi Day, I will share with you my families history. Featured is my ancestor Captain Gilbert Mair 1843 - 1923. He was the son of Sailor Gilbert Mair 1799 - 1857. Gilbert Senior signed the Declaration of Independence of New Zealand and helped to build Christ Church in Russell.
Gilbert Junior spoke fluent Te Reo, he fought beside and led Te Arawa. He developed friendships with Māori and was gifted several priceless artifacts, which can be viewed at Auckland Museum.
He was laid to rest at St Faith’s Church in Ōhinemutu, Rotorua.
