Happy belated World Wildlife Day!
On the 20th of December 2013, the United Nations declared the 3rd of March World Wildlife Day, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wildlife.
We are fortunate in New Zealand to have numerous indigenous species, including two tuatara, two bats, 17 marine mammals, 51 freshwater fish and 91 birds. Sadly many of our indigenous species are threatened or at risk of extinction, including 90 percent of seabirds and 22 percent of marine mammals (including New Zealand sea lions).
If we want to live in a world with an abundance of wildlife we must stand with Papatūānuku. The responsibility to protect wildlife is ours.
