Five Reasons To Protect The Bay Of Islands

1) The History. Rich in history, the Bay of Islands is considered the birthplace of our nation.
The Bay of Islands was home to many well known Maori such as Hone Heke. Captain Cook named the region Bay of Islands in 1769 due to the quantity of islands - 144 in total.
New Zealand's first flag was selected at Waitangi. The Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Waitangi were signed onsite.
The small community of Okiato was the first capital of New Zealand, once known as the 'Hell Hole of the Pacific' Russell was the second capital and Wellington is the current capital.
2) Nature. Known for its natural attractions the Bay of Islands offers a variety of activities from marine species / bird watching, island exploration to water activities.
 3) Endangered Species. The Department of Conservation and Project Island Song are dedicated to maintaining predator free environments for our native birds to thrive.
4) Cultural Heritage. In the 1800's explorers and trading ships began arriving on local shores. Europeans were met by Maori who were settled at the Te Puke cones.
 New Zealand's history is well documented at Waitangi Treaty Grounds and is well worth a visit.
5) Community. The Bay of Islands attracts all nationalities and ages creating a cultural and vibrant community.
