Biggest Waste Contributors

To combat waste in ‘Clean Green’ New Zealand, we need to identify our biggest waste contributors:

National Litter Audit Surveyors sourced the following statistics over a 6 month period.  

1) Cigarette Butts:
New Zealand has been littered in over 10 BILLION cigarette butts.
2) Disposable Nappies:
4 MILLION disposable nappies. The equivalent of filling 158 olympic sized swimming pools.
3) Plastic:
Over 4 BILLION individual pieces of plastic have been disposed of.
4) Takeaway Containers:
Over 2 MILLION litres of takeaway containers. The equivalent of filling 25 rugby fields 1 metre high.
5) Illegal Dumping of Rubbish:
2 MILLIONS litres of rubbish has been illegally dumped. The equivalent of filling 2123 rail carriages.
