Coal Mining

Bathurst Resources is a 38 hectare coal mine located at Coalgate. They are planning to extend their coal mine into 18 hectares of forest, farmland and wetlands on the margin of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.
Currently Bathurst Resources supply 95,000 tonnes of low sulphur coal annually to regional customers.
Forest & Bird and Extinction Rebellion are among the lobbyists opposing their plan.
As a result of human colonisation less than .05% of original native flora remains on the Canterbury Plains.
Please protect Selwyn’s biodiversity.
