New rules have been passed into law today to protect and restore New Zealand’s freshwater.
The new rules include:
1) Giving effect to Te Mana o Te Wai (holistic approach to protecting freshwater).
2) Safeguarding wetlands and streams.
3) Setting higher health standards at swimming spots.
4) Controlling high-risk agricultural practices.
5) Controlling nitrogen pollution.
6) Preserving New Zealand's fish habitats.
Hon David Parker stated “These regulations deliver on the Government’s commitment to stop further degradation, show material improvements within five years and restore our waterways to health within a generation.”
