Highlighting Heroes: Denis Hayes

Meet Denis Hayes. He organised the first #EarthDay on the 22nd of April 1970, where 20 million people (tenth of the population) across the United States took part in demonstrations, marches and environmental cleanups.
Their efforts proved successful and Congress passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. Republican President Richard M. Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency.

He identifies a connection between coronavirus and climate change and states "Covid-19 robbed us of Earth Day this year. So let’s make Election Day Earth Day.”
His take on ecology? “The problem isn’t technological; the problem is a matter of values.”

Initially reported by John Schwartz from The New York Times.
