Happy Māori Language Week! Kia Kaha te Reo Māori!
According to Māori mythology, the origin of New Zealand began with Māui. Māui set out on his waka to go fishing, from the depths he hauled a massive fish that became the North Island, Te Ika-a-Māui. Māui’s waka became the South Island, Te Waipounamu and his anchor became Stewart Island, Rakiura.
