Make Matariki A Public Holiday

While establishing Matariki as a public holiday will cost money, five reasons I believe Matariki should become a public holiday are:
1) Matariki is unique to New Zealand.
2) Māori celebrated Matariki religiously until 1940. Since 2000, Matariki has become popular again.
3) For Māori, Matariki signifies remembrance, fertility and celebration.
4) Matariki is regarded as the Māori New Year; according to the Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar), the reappearance of Matariki during Pipiri (June/July) signals the New Year.
5) It is a festival of aroha (love).

Please support the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand's bid to establish Matariki as a public holiday. Please join me in signing Laura O'Connell Rapira's petition on ActionStationhttps://our.actionstation.org.nz/…/make-matariki-a-public-h….
