Every year the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand host Mental Health Awareness Week from the 21st - 27th of September.
Te Whare Tapa Whā refers to the four cornerstones of health developed by Sir Mason Durie in 1984:
1) Taha Tinana/Physical.
2) Taha Wairua/Spiritual.
3) Taha Hinengaro/Mental and Emotional.
4) Taha Whānau/Family and Social.
Depression is a serious illness.
According to Balance Aotearoa, one in five women and one in ten men suffer from depression in New Zealand. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in New Zealand.
If you are feeling depressed:
1) Reach out to family and friends.
2) Call Healthline on 0800 611 116.
3) Speak to a health professional.
4) Visit the beach or walk through the forest. It has been scientifically proven that being in proximity to the oceans and forests alleviates symptoms of depression.
5) Try meditation or yoga. Both have been scientifically proven to reduce stress, anxiety and improve quality of life.
6) Take time out for yourself.
Be kind to yourself and to one another. Kia Kaha.
