Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is all about the health of the soil, according to Phyllis Tichinin, a Californian nutritionist who consults with kiwi fruit growers and dairy farmers in Hawkes Bay.
The principles of regenerative agriculture are:
1) Minimising soil disturbance. There is no need to use excessive tillage or biocides.
2) Maximising biodiversity by planting a range of foliage species.
Helen and Paul Barrett and Susan Velvin are the owners of Linnburn Station and have planted my favourite flower sunflowers in their fields.
3) Keep the earth armoured. There should be something growing in the soil at all times.
4) Add animals. Animal manure is a great fertiliser.
Soil microbiologist Dr Walter Jehne of Healthy Soils Australia states 'We can naturally cool the planet. And we can do this through rebuilding, through regenerating, the Earth's soil carbon sponge."
