Spot the Sea Lion
Yesterday Oamaru was visited by a rare New Zealand sea lion pup. It had ventured on to the road; thankfully the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony team and a Department of Conservation ranger quickly intervened.
I conveniently was travelling through Oamaru when I was notified. After assessing the situation, Georgie from the Blue Penguin Colony and I set up cones to deter passersby and I contacted Jordana and Amanda from the New Zealand Sea Lion Trust.
All is well that ends well!
The mainland population of New Zealand sea lions gives birth to approximately 20 pups annually. It is a privilege to witness a New Zealand sea lion pup and their safety is paramount.
