Wind Energy

1) New Zealand has 17 wind farms in operation.

2)  The combined installed capacity is 690 megawatts.

3) Six percent of New Zealand’s annual electricity generation is from wind farms.

4) The equivalent is providing electricity to 300,000 kiwi homes annually.

5) Wind turbine blades are functional for 25 years.

6) The old blades are cut into three, stacked and buried.

7) Don Lilly, chief executive of Global Fiberglass Solutions in Bellevue, Washington believes they don't have to go into landfill: he has been transforming fibreglass composites into small pellets he calls EcoPoly.

8) The pellets can then be turned into injectable plastics such as Nylon or Polypropylene, or highly waterproof boards that can be used in construction.
